Security Warning: re automatic update of links

I have used earlier versions of a basic spreadsheet with earlier versions of Excel (2003, 2007). I resaved the most recent XL 2007 file under a new name when updating to Office 2010 RTM.

ONLY when opening this new file do I get a message essentially stating: there are external links to this file. Do you want them to be updated? I said NO, and I now get the message: Warning: Automatic update of links has been disabled.

I went into Data > edit links > select Data source and found the 3 links are to

1: MSN MoneyCentral Investor Stock Quotes.iqy dated 10-8-1999

2: MSN MoneyCentral Investor Currency Rates.iqy dated 3-22-2000

and 3: MSN MoneyCentral Investor Major Indicies.iqy dated 2-20-2003

I have never used whatever MSM Money Central Investor is, and 2 of these file dates are more than a decade old.

Any ideas on why these links only appear in the most recent version of the file, where they may have come from, and how do I get rid of them? ( The links do not appear in the file that this version was copied and renamed from, whether it is opened in XL 2007 or 2010))

What if if you try breaking the link in the Data option of excel.

Try if you have these add-ins enabled in Excel or if they excist in the excel startup folders.

This was/is and Add-in.

Try choosing Office Button, Excel Options, Add-ins, at the bottom of the screen change Manage to COM Add-ins and click Go. See if you find the add-in that relates to MSN Money and try to disable or remove it.

Minor forum rant: I have already completed a reply to this, but my entire set of comments was deleted when I clicked on "Mark as Answer" at the top before clicking on "Submit" at the bottom. I see this as a BUG in the forum software which should at least be mentioned in the header of every page. It may also increase the number of replies indicating HOW or WHY a reply worked as an answer. In this case, however, the reply that "worked" as an answer resolved why the error message was displayed, and enabled me to get rid of it, but not why the error occurred in the first place.

Now, as to the problem at hand.... For reference - NO addin's are enabled. Briefly, the error message goes away if you select (in Excel 2010 ) Data > Connections > Edit Links and delete the links displayed. I had two links to different versions of the Workbook from 2008. The 2009 version, created in XL 2010 Beta, does not display these links, and the only difference with the 2010 Workbook version is that I deleted a number of sheets from the 2009 workbook and resaved the resulting version as the 2010 workbook in the same XL 2010 Beta version.

I am at a loss to understand why deleting sheets from a workbook would create links to files that have been deleted months ago. Perhaps references to the two earlier versions of this file still exist as deleted links and remain embedded in the workbook so you can restore all previous versions of the file later ( infinite undo file?)

KEY CONCERN: Since the links do NOT appear and are NOT accessible in the INTERIM version (2009) of this file, how can you be certain that a file you send out linkless and sanitized to clients will not somehow "Grow" links that are not knowable in the original version?

Should this be a new thread or should we consider this issue a possible bug in XL 2010 Beta that perhaps has been fixed?

Anywhoo, Thanks for the resolution.

Hi Lightft,

I see it as a bug also, so I posted it to

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/answersfeedback/threads

and got back that this was the intended behavior, here is the thread:

You may want to post to the first site above. Maybe someone will listen?

Hi,

I resolved this problem by doing following -

Go to Data->Edit Links. There you can see all sources that cause warning message. In most of the cases you don't want to update any links. Click on Startup Prompt and select any of the last two options.

Thanks
