Outlook automatically updated my backup on an external hard drive ????

I just noticed that my outlook.pst file on my backup on my hard drive has the same date and time as my active .pst file on the computer. I assume this means they are the same. How can this be? I wanted to restore to my back up from last night but it appears I can't. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

How are you creating this "backup"" file? You must never do so from within Outlook because you do no want this file remaining connected to your profile, especially if it i on an external drive. Make your copy from Windows Explorer when you are certain Outlook is fully closed.
Outlook does no such thing. State what backup utility you are using. State the difference between your "backup on your hard drive" and "my active .pst."

Thanks Russ for the reply. My "active.pst" file is the "Outlook.pst" file in Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook. When I "back up", I make and place a "duplicate" on to the external hard drive. Acocrdingly, the file name on my external drive is the same - Outlook.pst. The reason I think these two files are the same is that the size of the file and the date is the same.

Thanks again Russ for any further insight you might be able to share.

Given your earlier remark, I checked further and confirmed that the backup file was not the same as my active file - despite the date and time associated with the back-up file was the same as my active file - strange. Any way, I was able to retrieve the data I needed, so thanks for pointing me in this direction.
